Phil MacFarlane founded JVM Research & Advisory Services to help business and legal professionals respond to increasing policy uncertainty. He has more than 15 years of experience providing political and policy analysis for business clients.
Phil built his career at the intersection of business and policy with more than 15 years of experience in analyzing the business impacts of regulatory changes, policy trends, and political developments. He has advised clients on tax and trade policy, energy policy, and geopolitics.
Prior to starting JVM, he worked for professional services firms, including more than 10 years at a Big Four accounting and advisory firm. He previously worked as an energy market analyst, covering global energy markets and energy geopolitics.
Phil holds a B.A. in History from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He earned an M.A. in International Relations from Boston University Pardee School, where he studied global economic institutions, U.S.-Latin American trade relations, and U.S. foreign policy. He also holds a J.D. from the University of Houston, where he studied international trade policy. He is a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy. His published works cover China-Latin American relations, the IMF’s policy on capital controls, and U.S. foreign policy.
